Fireside Chat: Folktale Stories from the Black Diaspora is an event that invites the Harvard community to gather in the spirit of storytelling, memory, and shared history. Across the Black diaspora, folktales have served as vessels for wisdom, resistance, and survival and shaped cultural identity. This event centers the power of oral tradition as a way to honor the past while making space for present-day stories. While this event is rooted in African folktale stories, we acknowledge the similarities and shared themes found in other cultures, and we invite the Harvard community to propose sharing their stories.

If there’s a folktale from your culture that you’d like to share, please sign up here by February 17! You can present it in any oral format you’d like, for example, acting it out, oral interpretation, spoken word, music, or simply telling the story. We’ll have food from various Black cultures. Selected participants will have the opportunity to share the story at the event. Please reach out to npdwomoh@college.harvard.edu with any questions. All Harvard affiliates are welcome to submit a response.
