What to expect from your conference:

Conferences are available by appointment Monday through Friday from 9 am until 5 pm.

When you arrive for a conference, please have a seat in our waiting area; a tutor will be with you shortly. Tutors, like you, are students, and while they will make every effort to arrive within 10 minutes of the scheduled conference time, please keep in mind that they, too, are coming from classes and other obligations.

Tutors will typically begin by speaking with you about your assignment. Do not be taken aback if a tutor puts aside written material until later in the conference. Rest assured that we will have time to look over anything written that you bring.

Writing Center tutors have one goal in mind: to help you become a better writer. Our concerns go beyond working on one particular paper. While we're happy to work with you on ideas, organization, argument, sentence structure, etc. in a particular piece of writing, we also have in mind larger issues about argumentation, critical thinking, and style. For this reason, conferences are highly interactive. We are trained to focus on problems in a short period of time and to teach you skills that will serve you throughout your college career and beyond. As you work with us, we hope you'll find that you are gaining confidence and independence in your college writing.

The Writing Center is a resource for writers of all abilities. Just as professional writers show their work to trusted colleagues, we're here for students who value having a sensitive and helpful reader. We are also trained to help with specific issues that students face, such as inexperience in moving from high school to college writing, the challenges of argument, and the strategies for organizing papers of different lengths.

We realize you might not always be able or even want to show a completed draft to a tutor. Feel free to come to the Writing Center at any stage of the writing process. We can help you talk through ideas to start outlining, hone an outline that you've started working with, evaluate a draft in mid-composition, or look through a final draft. At whatever stage you come to us, we're confident we can help you write more efficiently and effectively.
