This is one of the most useful collections of online reference libraries for teachers and
students, scholars and researchers on the World Wide Web. There are online dictionaries such as
the Webster's Dictionary and the American English Dictionary. Users can search a word online
and get helpful explanations on the meaning, pronunciation tips and useful examples on usage.
The Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing and the BABEL: A Glossary of Computer Oriented Abbreviations
and Acronyms are excellent quick reference tools for computer terms. In addition, there are acronym
dictionaries and thesauri. such as Roget's Thesaurus. There are also easy reference tools for quotations
and slangs. The Bartlett's Book of Familiar Quotations gives instant access to famous quotations and
they can be displayed either in alphabetical order or chronological order. The site is a real treasure for
self-access learning.
Online libaries at Harvard University
According to the Harvard University Publications Office's Guide to the Harvard University
Library (1996), The Harvard University Library, dating from 1638, is the oldest library
in the United States and the largest university library in the world. It now contains more than
13 million volumes, in addition to manuscripts, microforms, maps, photographs, and other materials.
The collections are housed in over 90 libraries, most located in Cambridge and Boston, but others
as distant as Washington, DC and Florence, Italy.
This is only a summary description of a small part of the library collections. Printed guides
to particular libraries and collections are available. All the following libraries have their
own web pages and offer additional services such as tours and bibliographic instruction.
