President Jiang at Harvard Protesters and supporters

China's President Jiang Zeming visited Harvard University on November 1, 1997 and gave a speech at the Sanders Theatre. Thousands of protesters and supporters crowded the streets near the Sanders Theatre. Demonstration and celebration went side by side without any violence. As Professor Ezra Vogel, Director of Fairbank Center of East Asian Studies and host of the event, said, "Harvard is the place where democracy works."
