Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholars Program 1997-98 HOME

Sympathy, hope, encouragement and the courage to be.

Ge haile, 28, a former computer engineer from Beijing, came to further study Computing Science at Harvard University. Only two months after arrival, he took his life on November 5, 1997.

Ge's untimely demise brought his parents and President Rudenstine of Harvard to attend his funeral on December 5, 1997. Why did a young man in his prime, an international student at the most renowned university of the United States, take his own life?

In a letter to Ge's parents, President Rudenstine touched their hearts with his condolences. Didn't President Rudenstine's letter to the parents and the parents' open letter to the President make us think deeper about our care for others and needs for others' encouragement from time to time?
