A sad
thing that happened on campus has triggered the idea of this encouragement page.
Ge haile, 28, a former computer engineer from Beijing, came to further study computing science at Harvard University on August 30, 1997. Within two months, he took his life on
November 5, 1997. Why? A young man in his prime, a promising Chinese
budding scholar and engineer at the first university of the United States, why did take his life?
Don't President Rudenstine's letter to the parents and the parents' open letter to the President make us think deeper about our relationship with each other? Don't we need encouragement from time to time? The more I felt the pain, the hurt and the suffering of the parents, the more I was moved by the ideas reflected in these "words to live by" and Confucian humanism; the need to build each other up and interpersonal relationships. As Prof. Tu Weiming, Harvard professor of Chinese history and philosophy, asks: "Are we isolated individuals, or do we each live as a center of interpersonal relationships?" Is mere calculating rationality enough for our survival as a community? Don't we need sympathy as we learn from Confucian humanism? Don't we need compassion and love as we learn from Heaven, Earth and human as one body?
