Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholars Program 1997-98 HOME
Amazing Grace A sad thing that happened on campus has triggered the idea of this encouragement page. Ge haile, 28, a former computer engineer from Beijing, came to further study computing science at Harvard University on August 30, 1997. Within two months, he took his life on November 5, 1997. Why? A young man in his prime, a promising Chinese budding scholar and engineer at the first university of the United States, why did take his life?

Don't President Rudenstine's letter to the parents and the parents' open letter to the President make us think deeper about our relationship with each other? Don't we need encouragement from time to time? The more I felt the pain, the hurt and the suffering of the parents, the more I was moved by the ideas reflected in these "words to live by" and Confucian humanism; the need to build each other up and interpersonal relationships.   As Prof. Tu Weiming, Harvard professor of Chinese history and philosophy, asks: "Are we isolated individuals, or do we each live as a center of interpersonal relationships?"  Is mere calculating rationality enough for our survival as a community?   Don't we need sympathy as we learn from Confucian humanism?  Don't we need compassion and love as we learn from Heaven, Earth and human as one body?

Words to Live By
Race of life
“ How are you running?”

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power
of the weak. Those who hope in the Lord will
renew their strength.  They will soar like eagles;
they will run and not get tired, they will walk
and not become weary.
		Isaiah 40:29-

Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?
Or am I trying to please men?
If I were still trying to please men,
I would not be a servant of Christ.
		Galatians 1:10

Great faith isn't the ability to believe long and far
into the misty future. It's simply taking God at
His work and taking the next step.
		Joni Tada

Be confident of this,
that He who began a good work in you
will carry it on to completion
until the day of Christ Jesus.

People learn from one another, just as iron sharpens iron.
		Proverbs 27:18

Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know
something does not yet have the necessary knowledge, but anyone who
loves God is known by him."
		Corithian 8:1-2

Learning is making mistakes and correcting them.

It takes a lot of courage
To put things in God's hands
	To give ourselves completely-
Our lives, our hopes, and our plans-
To follow where he leads us
And make his will our own-
But all it takes is foolishness
		To go the way alone.

Humble yourselves, therefore under God's mighty hand,
that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your
anxiety on Him for He cares for you.
		1 Peter 5:5-7

He knows the way that I take. When He has tested me, I will
come forth as gold." Job 23:10

In our daily toil of living with the forces of the night,
the Almighty shines like a beacon with darkness of the fight,
there to cause us to gaze heavenward, there lift our downcast eyes
from the earthly sinful struggles to the upward call of Christ."

From Francis Edward Su's song "Light of Life" December 1995
after the traditional American tune, "Come the fountain of
	every blessing."

Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only
one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it.
Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive
a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not
run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air, but I
punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others
I myself should not be disqualified.
		Corithian: 9:24-27

This is what the Lord says:
"Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls."
	Jer 6:16
