Jennifer Weiss
is in her ninth year as head coach of the Harvard women's volleyball
team. In 1999 Weiss led the Crimson to the finals of the Ivy League Tournament where Harvard fell in a close five set match. The team recorded a 20-13 mark, placed four players on the All-Ivy teams, and produced the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year in setter Mindy Jellin. The previous season, Weiss traveled with her team westward to St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA, in September for a four-match tournament. It was the first trip to the West Coast for the program. Throughout her seven-year tenure, Weiss has proven to be one of the most successful coaches in the Ivy League. In the past four years alone, she has coached eleven All-League players. Weiss posted her best season in 1997, when she led the Crimson to a perfect 7-0 record in regular season League play and an impressive 25-9 record overall. The team set a school record for victories - eclipsing the 21-win mark set by Weiss' 1995 squad. Weiss served as Harvard's assistant coach for one year prior to her appointment as head coach in 1993. In her rookie season at the helm, her squad tripled its win total from the previous year with a 9-16 mark. After improving to 12 wins in her second season, Weiss guided Harvard to a 21-10 mark in 1995 - the program's first winning campaign since 1989. A 1988 graduate of Bentley College with a bachelor's degree in finance, Weiss had a successful volleyball career as a four-year starter for the Lady Falcons. As a freshman, she was named Rookie of the Year in the Northeast-10 Conference and was an All-Conference player. In two of her four seasons, she helped lead the Falcons to the Northeast-10 title. In recognition of her achievements on the court, Weiss was inducted into the Bentley College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 in Waltham, MA. Weiss earned her Master's of Education from Springfield College in 1992. While at Springfield, she served as a graduate assistant with the women's volleyball program. In addition to coaching at Harvard, Weiss has also coached the Mass. Patriots club team for five years. Weiss resides in Ashland with her husband, Jay, who is the head coach of the Crimson's wrestling team. |
