Welcome...

Welcome to the Ottoman and Turkish studies website at Harvard University, created under the auspices of the Vehbi Koç professorship of Turkish Studies held by Professor Cemal Kafadar.

This website was created to serve several purposes. First of all, it brings together in a single forum the great variety of resources in Turkish and Ottoman studies at Harvard, which have traditionally been spread among several different departments, libraries and academic centers. You will find information on course offerings and faculty in Turkish studies in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Department of History , the Department of Economics, the Department of Government, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, the Department of Music, the Department of the Study of Religion, the Department of Sociology, the Core Curriculum, the Harvard Law School , and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies . You can explore the holdings of Harvard's libraries and museums as well as link to courses related to Ottoman and Turkish studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The website also provides information and links to other universities with programs and/or resources in Ottoman and Turkish studies worldwide. Additionally, we provide links to libraries, archives, government offices and independent scholarly organizations worldwide of value to students and scholars in the field.

Third, we hope that in the near future the site will become a clearinghouse for current work in the field of Turkish and Ottoman studies, including information on new publications, dissertation research, workshops and conferences, and major research projects.

Finally, the site includes a broad variety of information on Ottoman and Turkish culture and history, and links to Turkish cultural associations, student societies, media sources, and even recipes and tourism information.

While we are working to update and expand the site, we are always looking for new information. If you have seen a site that you think we should include, or if you have comments on the site in general, please do not hesitate to contact us.
