Outstanding
competition is guaranteed within the framework of Harvard's dual, relay
and major meet schedule. Beyond the dual and triangular meets, the
Crimson participates in the Heptagonal Championships and Eastern
Athletic and IC4A Conference sponsored championship events. In addition,
Harvard is represented at major events such as the Millrose Games and
the Penn Relays. Of course, every qualifying athlete competes at the
NCAA championships each year.
Spring
training trips during the outdoor season have been tradition for over
thirty-five years. Florida, South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana,
Puerto Rico and Jamaica have been among the sites of these trips.
The
cross country teams also have preseason training camps for both the
men's and women's squads. For those not participating in cross country
or another fall sport, a fall track program in which technique and
conditioning are emphasized is offered as well.
By
Ivy League agreement, freshmen are eligible to compete on the varsity
level. Varsity "B" competition, which gives many more athletes
opportunity to compete and improve, is also an important portion of the
Crimson program.

The Oxford-Cambridge Meet
Harvard is one of the few schools in
the United States which adds international flavor to its schedule. Many
Harvard athletes compete in the biennial Harvard-Yale vs.
Oxford-Cambridge meet, as the two Ivy League schools are matched against
these two famed British Universities. This tradition dates back to 1899
for the men, with women's competition added in 1981. Competition in
Scotland and Ireland is usually included during these trips to the
British Isles. The excitement of competing with our European
counterparts has provided Harvard graduates with enduring values and
lasting memories.

Meeting of The Minds
The first annual Meeting of the Minds
track and field competition was held at Rice University in the spring of
1985. Harvard emerged victorious over host Rice and Northwestern as the
tradition began for a meet between these top athletic and academic
institutions. The warm relationship continues to this day.
