Dear Candidate:

Harvard is constantly seeking talented students like you who will contribute to the University's reputation both in the classroom and on the track. The opportunity to combine academic work and athletic competition at one of the world's most renowned Universities is a rare and exciting prospect.

As the oldest and most prestigious University in the United States, Harvard has a faculty, library system, and academic resources which are second to none. The tremendous success of our alumni in business, government, medicine, education, and law is the strongest testament to a Harvard degree. Our students are as diverse a group as you could imagine at any college and you will find them to be friendly, enthusiastic, and energetic.

At Harvard, you would have the opportunity to compete in an outstanding athletic program. Harvard Cross Country and Track and Field have been dominant forces in Eastern track and we have had more than our share of NCAA and USATF champions and scorers. Barcelona and Atlanta Olympians, Meredith Rainey '90 (800) and Nick Sweeney '92 (Discus), are recent testaments to successful development through the Harvard approach. Our intent is to provide coaching and opportunity for the motivated and committed student to as challenging a degree as one's abilities and aspirations warrant. This is accomplished within the context of a successful team from which members can both offer and draw support.

Academically, our present men's and women's team members have ranked in the top 5% - 10% of their respective high school classes, have had combined scores of 1200 or better on their SAT I exams and 29 or better on their ACT exams, and have scored at or above 600 on each of at least three SAT 11 exams. These are helpful, but not exclusive, academic guidelines in identifying strong candidates. A candidate's high school transcript is the most important indicator of academic potential.

If you have a strong interest in applying to Harvard, you must take either the SAT I or ACT and at least three SAT 11 exams. The deadline for Harvard applications is January 1 and the last test scores admissible are those taken in the month of January. Ask your school's guidance office for information on where these exams are administered.

Please complete the following candidate information box. You may submit it electronically or send the information to the track office (address on front page). Our Admissions Office will then send applications to viable candidates. Do not hesitate to contact me if you or your parents have any questions concerning Harvard and the admissions process. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Walter Johnson Associate Head Coach
