Talking About Change: A Discussion with Stephen Greenblatt, Cogan University Professor and Chair of the Harvard Arts Task Force: Nearly one year ago, President Drew Faust commissioned the Harvard Arts Task Force, a group of faculty, practicing artists, students and administrators, to undertake a study of the arts at Harvard. This is the first University-wide assessment of the arts since the Brown Report of 1956. The Task Force’s recommendations will be submitted to the President in the fall of 2008. During the summer, OFA Director Jack Megan sat down with the Task Force’s Chair, Professor Stephen Greenblatt, to discuss his impressions of the past year and the work that has been done. Visual Arts = Community
Mentoring opportunities flourish in ceramics because of the long kiln firings and specialized equipment. Clay’s complex physical changes require the collective experience of a community. Beginners work alongside independent professionals, as well as resident and visiting artists. Outside of class time, the studio literally hums with activity as clay is transformed through each step from modeling to carving, glazing, and finally firing. Everyone gathers for the kiln loadings and unloadings, the sharing of ideas on glazing. (Read more...)

Jazz Saxophonist Joshua Redman '91 to be Awarded 2008 Harvard Arts Medal: Kicking off the ARTS FIRST festivities, Joshua Redman ’91— Grammy nominated saxophonist, recording artist and jazz bandleader—will receive the 2008 Harvard Arts Medal on Thursday, May 1, 2008. President Drew Gilpin Faust will present the medal as part of an event hosted by the Learning from Performers Program at 5pm in the New College Theatre. Redman will be the 14th distinguished Harvard or Radcliffe alum or faculty member to receive this accolade for excellence in the arts and contributions to education and the public good through arts. Revel in the Presence of Benny Golson: For the 31st year the Office for the Arts will collaborate with the Harvard Jazz Bands to honor distinguished artists in jazz.
