Nelson Mandela at Harvard, Sept. 1998

Harvard University established the Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program in 1979 to address the needs of South Africans who were denied access to advanced education because of apartheid. It is still intended for those South Africans who are educationally disadvantaged by past law and resource allocation.

The Program was conceived largely in terms of providing educational enrichment for men and women in mid-career; that is, individuals in various occupations who have shown considerable skill and leadership in their chosen fields and who are expected to benefit from advanced training. Fellowships are for a year of study in any of Harvard's many schools. The fellowship includes payment of tuition, a living allowance, and a return air ticket to the United States. Over 140 South African Fellows have studied at Harvard under this program since its inception.

The program is funded by the President of Harvard and the individual Harvard Schools which the fellows attend. The Director of the Program is Professor Felton James Earls of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. The Executive Director is Dr. Rita Breen who is also the Executive Officer of the Harvard Committee on African Studies.

In 2007 the Program established a partnership with the Mandela Rhodes Foundation in South Africa. Both organizations share a commitment to providing for the future of South Africa through education.
