Courses that Automatically Count in Social Studies

Class of 2010 and beyond

For the purposes of determining which courses will count for concentration credit, and for calculating the concentration GPA at the end of the senior year, Social Studies will automatically count courses from the following departments, which share faculty members with our program:

Anthropology
Economics
Government
History
Sociology

Social Studies will also count ALL courses in the following Core and General Education categories:

Foreign Cultures
Historical Studies A and B
Moral Reasoning
Social Analysis

Ethical Reasoning
Societies of the World
The United States in the World

Students are welcome to petition the Board of Instruction to count courses from other departments (e.g., African and African-American Studies; Religion; The Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Culture and Belief) when they submit their plan of study. Typically, courses that have substantial social science, historical, or social theoretical content (e.g., more than half of the topics covered) can be counted, as can courses taught by faculty members with a Ph.D in the social sciences, history, or continental philosophy.
