I'm interested in linking functional morphology to ecology in mammals, specifically hominoids. How does the musculoskeletal anatomy of an animal reflect its performance, ecological niche, and evolutionary history? My dissertation research used a combined modeling and experimental approach to test hypotheses regarding the role of leg length in determining energy costs and speeds during walking and running in humans and other terrestrial mammals. The relationship between leg length and locomotor performance provides a useful line of evidence for testing hypotheses regarding the ranging and foraging behavior in hominids, and may provide a way to test ideas regarding selection pressures in early hominids and early Homo.
