Form: Red Polished III Ware "gourd" juglet. Piriform to ovoid body with rounded base, high cylindrical neck, wide flaring bell rim flattened to be disk-like in shape. Single vertical handle with a slight v-bend at mid-height, circular to sub-rectangular in section, from rim to high on shoulder. Fabric: Fine buff clay (10YR 8/3 very pale brown). Decoration: Thick orange /red slip (5YR 5/6 yellowish red). White-filled incised decoration: two sets of 4 and 5 incised encircling lines near rim and around the neck close to shoulder junction, row of incised diamond shapes with slanting, diagonal incisions inside, numbering 7 to 10, vertical panels on body consist of diamonds with diagonal incisions, and 2 sets of vertical lines also bordering diagonal incisions and 5 sets of horizontal bands with diagonal incisions between them; 5 sets of 5 rows of connecting incised lines (see photo) make up an irregular circle near the base. The back of the handle is decorated with incised diagonal bands which are difficult to see. The entire vessel is highly burnished/polished. Technical/Manufacturing: Burnish/polishing marks visible. Some spauling, one large lime inclusion blown out. Remarks: Provenance Alambra per Cesnola. Original Stanford number lost, TP means temporary number. New studies by Jane Barlow on the Red Polished Ware from Alambra Mouttes have divided Red Polished Ware into categories Red Polished A and B with distinct fabrics which the author believes form regional styles and fabrics, see Barlow and Vaughan references in the Bibliography. Early Cypriot/Middle Cypriot in date.
