Form: White Painted IV Ware juglet. Biconical body with a defined ridge/change of plane which isn't quite halfway down the body, small circular flattened base, long tapering neck with a narrow internal diameter and wide exterior junction with the shoulder, one area of the lower side of the slightly everted rim is preserved; single vertical lug/handle, D-shaped in section, from lower neck to shoulder connection, pushed through/pierced horizontally with a stick. Fabric: Fine, smooth, well-levigated beige/grey (10YR 8/2 white) clay with fine black inclusions. Decoration: No slip. Five applied string-hole lugs preserved: 1 below the lug/handle, 1 opposing, 2 sets either side of the neck (1 now broken away), all pierced through. Shadow decoration as little of the once dark (10YR N3/ very dark grey) paint remains: 9-10 encircling bands around the neck, numerous diagonal lines on the upper body extending to and down over the change of plane and then tapering to the base, some random horizontal strokes divide the body into 6 panels; there are similar strokes at right angles across the base, wide vertical stripe of paint down the handle. Technical/Manufacturing: Hand built. Neck not vertically placed, it leans forward. Interior of the lug/handle is well-smoothed by twirling the rounded stick once the piercing had been made. Body must have been cloth or rag-smoothed. Difference is color of the clay is noticeable where the paint has worn-off. Remarks: Provenance unknown. String-hole style dates this juglet to mid-Middle Cypriot (White Painted III-V) but the flattened base indicates a date moving closer to the Late Cypriot.
