The Freshman Seminar Program offers one of the best opportunities for incoming freshmen to work closely with members of the faculty on a variety of selected topics in a variety of ways, each of which differs according to the predilections of the seminar leader and of the students with whom he or she chooses to work. The operating premise of each seminar is that a member of the faculty will address a particular subject with which he or she is personally involved and will involve the members of the seminar in its investigation. The Program attempts to free both the seminar leader and the students from the usual constraints associated with a regular course offering: the seminars are not letter-graded and they do not have formal examinations.

In addition to the Freshman Seminar Program, there are two other very different sets of courses administered by the Fresham Seminars Office:

The House Seminar Program, intended for undergraduates in Harvard College, provides the opportunity for students to participate in small, limited enrollment courses offered in their House.

Extra-Departmental Courses, intended for undergraduates in Harvard College, offer courses that fall outside of the CORE requirements and complement the existing curriculum.
