Core ProgramSubcommittee on Foreign Cultures...is a constituent of the Standing Committee on the Core Program which aims to expand the Harvard College student's understanding and perspective on cultures significantly different than that of the United States or the Anglophone cultures of the British Isles. Courses administered by this committee may focus on the religious, ethical, social, economic, political, intellectual, or aesthetic idiosyncrasies of the world's various cultures and civilizations.

Core ProgramSubcommittee on Historical Study...is a constituent of the Standing Committee on the Core Program which aims to develop the Harvard College student's comprehension of history as a form of inquiry and understanding via two distinctive focuses: the background and development of major issues of the contemporary world as seen through historical study, or concentrated study of documented details of some particular event or group of events which have had a transformative effect on human affairs. Courses are likely to involve interdisciplinary study, yet will essentially be historical in nature, concentrating on sequential development and context.

Core ProgramSubcommittee on Literature and the Arts...is a constituent of the Standing Committee on the Core Program which administers three required half-credit courses, one each in Literature, Visual Arts or Music, and the Context of Culture. These courses aim to foster a critical understanding of artistic expression.

Core ProgramSubcommittee on Quantitative Reasoning...is a constituent of the Standing Committee on the Core Program which administers courses designed to introduce students to mathematical and quantitative modes of thought.

Core ProgramSubcommittee on Science...is a constituent of the Standing Committee on the Core Program which administers courses designed to convey to students a general understanding of science as a way of looking at man and the world, as well as to increase scientific literacy and an ability to approach scientific material intelligently. Courses are offered with two distinct focusses: either the predictive and deductive analysis of natural phenomena through quantitative treatment of their simple elements, or the analysis of more complex systems which cannot be predicted or deduced via natural behavior alone, including courses which delve into the historical, descriptive, or evolutionary aspects of the natural world.

Core ProgramSubcommittee on Social Analysis and Moral Reasoning...is a constituent of the Standing Committee on the Core Program which administers courses on two different aspects of societal development and the human experience. Courses on Social Analysis are designed to familiarize students with the social sciences and important problems involving the behavior of people and their institutions. Courses on Moral Reasoning are concerned with significant and recurrent questions of choice and value, and how those questions lead to making reasoned moral or political choices.

Dramatics...is primarily responsible for the establishment of policy for the Loeb Drama Center and the continuing responsibility for that policy in operation; the academic members of the committee have the additional responsibilities of recommending non-stipendiary lecturers in dramatic arts, and approval of credit courses in dramatic arts.

Freshman Seminars...is empowered to oversee the Freshman Seminar and House Seminar programs, and sponsor, under guidelines which the Committee develops, courses in General Education that, owing to their inter-disciplinary nature or to other circumstances, are not appropriately offered within the regular departments of instruction.

General Education...aims to achieve four goals that link the undergraduate experience to the lives students will lead after Harvard: to prepare students for civic engagement; to teach students to understand themselves as products of, and participants in, traditions of art, ideas, and values; to enable students to respond critically and constructively to change; and to develop students' understanding of the ethical dimensions of what they say and do.

Life Sciences Education...oversees issues relating to the life sciences curriculum, the running of the concentrations, student advising, and the creation of research opportunities for undergraduates. The primary responsibility for each concentration continues to rest with the relevant department and/or degree committee from within the Life Sciences Division: the Biological Anthropology wing of Anthropology, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, and Psychology.

Medieval Studies...is designed to promote and coordinate work in the enlarging area of medieval studies, to publicize this work within and outside the University, and to sponsor occasional events and activities of interest to medievalists. More specifically, the committee develops undergraduate interdisciplinary courses in medieval studies, gives advice and support for both undergraduate and advanced degree programs, arranges conferences and seminars, and coordinates activities with the Dumbarton Oaks research library in Washington D.C. and the Villa I Tatti in Florence, Italy.

Mind, Brain, and Behavior...is an interdisciplinary group of scholars appointed to coordinate the teaching of neuroscience and related fields among Harvard's departments by administering wide and varied course offerings, encouraging interdisciplinary interaction, and assisting students who wish to learn about opportunities for further study in fields allied with neuroscience.

Ukrainian Studies...is designed to facilitate the systematic study of Ukrainian subjects and coordinate work in these fields undertaken in the various departments of the University. It offers courses which allow the University's graduate students to fulfill the degree requirements of their respective departments (History, Slavic, Comparative Literature, Linguistics) while becoming specialists in an area of Ukrainian studies.
