This course covers the equivalent of one
full second year of instruction in modern standard Hindi. It stresses
a balance among reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Conventional teaching materials are supplemented by popular songs
and clips from contemporary Indian cinema. Prerequisites: Students
should have knowledge of Hindi equivalent to one full year of
study and be conversant with the Devanagari writing system before
entering this course.

This course will build on material covered
in the first semester of this course. Students will study
complex verb forms and grammar, completing the second half
of the language and grammar lessons of the first year Tamil
textbook. By the end of this course, students will be reading,
writing and speaking Tamil at an intermediate level.
This is the second semester of an introductory course to the
oldest of the Dravidian languages of South India. Tamil has
a rich and well-developed literary tradition that ranges from
ancient classical poetry and medieval devotional compositions
and epics to the present-day where the modern novel, short
story and drama coexist with vibrant traditions of folk poetry
and folk drama.

Bengali for Beginners is an introductory
course for students who want to learn a very popular South
Asian language and explore its rich literary heritage. This
full year course is intended for students with little or no
prior exposure to the language. Students will learn to speak,
read, and write basic Bengali. Though this is primarily a
language course, excerpts from prominent Bengali writers such
as Tagore, Jibananda Das, and Kaji Nozrul, as well as Satyajit
Ray's films will supplement conventional teaching materials
to give exposure to Bengali culture. |

Vikramarkabhyuadayam: A historical Sanskrit
Campu by Sri Somesvaradeva of Kalyana, ed. Murari Lal Nagar, GOS
150, Baroda 1966. This is a twelfth-century text by the western
Calukyan monarch Somesvara III. It is a biography of his father
Vikramaditya VI. Composed in ornate prose, it is rich in historical
details and references to realia. It initiated a genre of writings
(so-called abhyudaya kavyas) where South Indian princes describe
lives of their royal fathers. While reading this text, comparisons
can be made and parallels drawn with Somevara's more famous work
Manasollasa and also Bilhana's Vikramankadevacarita.
