Jeremy Belknap Prize
for Best Writing in French by a Freshman 2008
This prize is for the best writing in French by a first-year undergraduate student. The competition is open only to first-years who, at admission, have met the foreign language requirement in French, provided that they have not had exceptional opportunities to acquire the language that would thus place them at an unfair advantage. Two prizes will be awarded, normally around $1000 each.
Deadlines:
Thursday, April 16, 2009, no later than 5 p.m.: all candidates must sign up.
Friday April 17, 2009, no later than 5 p.m.: all candidates must submit writing sample

DESCRIPTION OF PRIZE AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- This prize is open only to Freshmen who, at admission, have met the foreign language requirement n French. Students who transferred to Harvard in their sophomore or junior year are not eligible.
- Students must have had no previous immersion in the F
- French language, such as living for an extended period in a French-speaking country, or living in a household where French is spoken.
- The Belknap is awarded for the best writing sample in French completed for a course offered by a member of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures during the 2008-2009 academic year.
- Writing samples may be of any length and may concern any topic. One award will be given for the best essay on a historical, literary, or cinematographical topic. A second award will be given for the best creative composition.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS :
- Applicants must sign up to compete by e-mailing Walter Hryshko (hryshko@fas.harvard.edu) no later than Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 5pm.
- Students must submit graded written work with instructor’s comments. In instances where the instructor corrected more than one draft, all drafts must be submitted. Note that submissions must be regular course papers. Candidates may not approach their instructor or a third party for additional assistance with their submission.
- All candidates must complete the attached cover page and include it with their submission. To ensure anonymity in the judging process, only your pseudonym should appear on the writing sample. Your real name should be blackened out on all pages of the writing sample.
- Three copies of the writing sample (and, if applicable, drafts) as well as the cover page must be placed in an envelope marked with the title "Belknap" and the candidate's pseudonym.
- Students may make a maximum of two submissions. The three copies of each submission must be in separate envelopes with separate cover pages and two different pseudonyms.
- No later than 5pm on Friday April 17, submissions must be left in the mailbox of Walter Hryshko, to the left as one exits the elevator or front stairs on the 4th floor of Boylston Hall.
- Failure to comply with the above guidelines may result in disqualification from the contest.
