Professor Mary Brinton joined the Harvard faculty in the spring of 2003 from Cornell University. She previously taught at the University of Chicago, and her research focuses on gender stratification, labor market organization, and education in Japan. Her publications include Women and the Economic Miracle: Gender and Work in Postwar Japan (1993), The New Institutionalism in Sociology, edited with Victor Nee (1998, 2001), and Women's Working Lives in East Asia (2001, editor). Professor Brinton is currently working on a book comparing the high school-to-work transition in Japan and the U.S., with particular emphasis on Japanese youth and the widening inequality among social classes in Japan.
