A native of Dallas, Professor John Rosenfield attended the University of Texas at Austin until enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. His first trips to Asia (India, China, Korea and Japan) took place during his military service. Before earning his Ph.D. at Harvard he also studied at the University of California at Berkeley, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Iowa. He served at Harvard for 25 years until his retirement in 1991. Professor Rosenfield has organized various national exhibitions of Japanese art and has lectured widely. His publications have dealt with Indian and Central Asian Buddhist arts of the Kushan period, Japanese Buddhist painting and sculpture, and early modern Japanese painting.
