Born in Mordialloc, Australia, Professor Harold Bolitho was educated at Trinity Grammar School in Kew. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Melbourne and then his Master's, Master's of Philosophy, and Ph.D. from Yale University. He received language training at International Christian University, Mitaka, Japan. Professor Bolitho taught at the University of Melbourne and Monash University, and has conducted research at various times at Tokyo Kyoiku Daigaku, Australian National University, Tohoku Daigaku, Cambridge University, Oxford University, and Kyoto Daigaku (Jinbun kagaku kenkyujo). During 1983-84 he served as the Visiting Reischauer Professor and in 1985 became Professor of Japanese History in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Professor Bolitho was a Visiting Professor at the Research Institute for Humanities at Kyoto University in 1989. His publications include Treasures Among Men (1974), A Northern Prospect (1981), with Alan Rix (Japanese Studies Association of Australia), numerous articles (including chapters in The Cambridge History of Japan, 1988-89), and book reviews. He has recently published Bereavement and Consolation: Testimonies from Tokugawa Japan (2003).
