THE NOMA-REISCHAUER PRIZES IN JAPANESE STUDIES

To honor the memory of Professor Edwin O. Reischauer, who served as Ambassador to Japan from 1961 to 1966, and to assist in the further advancement of Japanese studies in the United States, Japan, and elsewhere, Kodansha Ltd., Publishers, has established the Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies.
Terms
The prizes will be awarded annually for the best essays on Japan-related topics written by Harvard University students:
- one prize of $3,000. for the best essay by a graduate student, and
- one prize of $2,000. for the best undergraduate essay
Eligibility
Essays must have been written during the current academic year and be submitted to the Reischauer Institute by Monday, June 21, 2010. The essays may be of any length, and may be course or seminar papers, B.A. or M.A. theses, or written specifically for the competition. However, doctoral dissertations, as such, will be excluded from consideration. One entry per student per year.
Application Process
Please submit a complete application consisting of the following:
- Submit three copies of the essay (specifying that it is for the Noma-Reischauer prize)
- Attach a cover sheet with:
• Your name
• Harvard ID number
• Citizenship
• Contact info: current/permanent & summer mailing addresses, telephone number(s), and email.
• Harvard department and degree program, and year
Application Deadlines:
Essay must be received by 5 p.m., June 21, 2010.
