Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan

The Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan (DCJ), now a part of the Fung Library of Harvard College Library, offers important resources on contemporary Japan that complement the Japan-related holdings of other libraries on campus. The DCJ collects materials on postwar Japan, weighted heavily toward the social sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on resources related to political science, diplomacy, economics and labor, and social-cultural phenomena. In addition to its selection of mainstream studies, the DCJ collects non-trade publications, journals, newsletters, scholarly papers, and reports issued by government ministries and institutions, private sector "think tanks," and university affiliated research and policy institutions. One of the unique resources at the DCJ is its newspaper clippings file. From its inception in 1988, the DCJ has clipped and filed thousands of articles drawn from Japan Times, Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun as well as Japan Digest, a daily fax service from Washington, D.C. To date, the DCJ’s accumulated Japanese news resources – largely inaccessible electronically – cover over 130 categories relating to contemporary Japan as well as the general Asia-Pacific context.
