Announcements & Updates:

1. FAS Personnel Updates: Please welcome our new RAS Friday attendees from OSP, FAS, and SEAS:

  • Nadija Mujagic (SEAS) -- Senior Grants and Contracts Specialist
  • Victoria Chen (OSP) -- Financial Manager (Life Science Team)
  • Michelle Monestime (CMES) -- Financial Associate
  • Samantha Schwartz (RAS) -- ARRA Project Specialist
  • Kathy Zuccala (CCB) -- Senior Sponsored Research Administrator

2. Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Course

The RCR training requirements are different for NIH than for NSF. NIH requires in-person RCR training, and a course will be available starting in March (taught by Mark Barnes and Delia Wolf) to satisfy the NIH in-person training requirement. For more information, please see handout. NSF now requires RCR training for undergraduates or graduate students, but in-person training is not required by NSF, so the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online course will suffice. NIH requires RCR training for training grants and NRSAs only, while NSF requires RCR training for any NSF award. Please see the RCR section of the RAS website for further information.

3. GMAS/CREW updates

There will be a GMAS release available March 14th, and part of the new functionality will be a dashboard that will allow you to see sponsor notices for which an Action Memo has not yet been issued.

4. GMAS Rollout Implementation Plan (GRIP) update

A HURON consultant (Julie Kristian) has been hired to manage the GMAS Rollout to FAS departments. Julie worked with the Harvard School of Public Health to roll out GMAS during the Research Transformation Project (RTP) at that school. Three FAS departments (Earth and Planetary Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and the Harvard Forest) have been selected to be GMAS pilot departments during this next phase of the GMAS rollout. For questions on the FAS GMAS rollout, please email grip-help@harvard.edu.

7. Research Development

Call for Nominations for the 2011 Prince of Asturias Awards is open. The deadline for nominations is March 18, 2011.  The Prince of Asturias Awards are a series of annual prizes awarded in Spain by the Prince of Asturias Foundation to individuals, entities and/or organizations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, or public affairs. Nominators are asked to kindly send the names of their nominees to Kathryn M. Coughlin (Social Science and Humanities divisions) at coughlin@fas.harvard.edu or to Susan Gomes (Science Division) at susan_gomes@harvard.edu

8. Education update

9. New Post Doctorate Director

Susan Gomes announced that Melanie Sinche is now the Director of the FAS Office for Postdoctoral Affairs. Melanie comes to Harvard from NIH, where she was a nationally-certified career counselor.

10. Faculty Effort Certification update

The data has been loaded into FASERS and is ready for departmental faculty effort coordinators to go in and enter effort commitments for FY 10 for faculty in their departments. The deadline for completion is Tuesday, March 8th, so that we leave enough time for faculty to go in and certify prior to the final deadline. Please contact Sheila Doyle or Alan Long if you have any questions about this process.
