6. NSF GRFP Teaching Restriction
The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) recently announced a policy change. Beginning in academic fellowship year 2011-2012, Fellows will be considered to be working at 1.0 FTE; therefore, they will not be allowed to teach while receiving fellowship funding. Fellows wanting to teach or receive support on a research assistantship will need to be on reserve status or will need to forfeit their GRFP stipend during the time of employment. This change applies to both new and continuing NSF GRFP fellows.
Download the NSF GRFP guide for more information. Note: the first four bookmarks relate directly to the policy change.
Please contact Karen Woodward Massey with questions/concerns regarding this new policy.
7. Education/Intern updates
The next Overview of Sponsored Projects Administration will be held on May 4th at the Longwood Medical Area.
REACH Foundations and Intermediate programs are both currently underway and are running smoothly.
RAS is currently accepting and reviewing internship applications. Please contact Karen Woodward Massey if you're interested in hosting an intern.
Reporting Roles and Responsibilities Matrix
Pat Fitzgerald, FAS RAS -- Associate Dean for Research Administration
Rachel Cahoon, OSP -- Sponsored Programs Officer and Manager, Physical and Social Sciences
A new Roles and Responsibilities Matrix outlining responsibilites for OSP, RAS, department administrators, and PIs is now available for reference. This document introduces one significant change: beginning May 1st, propsals should be routed electronically via GMAS to OSP only for review. OSP will then forward proposals to RAS for additional review as appropriate. This routing adjustment is intended to streamline the review process.
Questions? Comments? Please contact Pat Fitzgerald.
The Role of the University Development Office and the University Coordinated Prospects List
Sarah M. Jackson -- Senior Associate Director, University Academic and Development Planning
The University Development Office (UDO) has selected a small number of organizations with whom the University has pre-existing relationships or has the opportunity to develop a robust institutional relationship; this information is collected on the University Coordinated Prospect Critera and List. The list has recently been streamlined and now contains five specific criteria indicating when a prospect should be included. The UDO should be contacted for consultation prior to any contact with or proposal submission to these entities. Please direct all related inquiries to Sarah M. Jackson, the UDO's corporate and foundation fundraiser for the forthcoming campaign.
Coach's Corner: Fabrication Object Codes - Why They Matter
Kara Colannino, FAS RAS -- Research Finances and Systems Specialist
Maureen Rekrut, FAS Finance -- Accounting Management
Equipment object codes impact whether or not overhead is recovered and the amount of depreciation taken on any given item. Object codes also affect the way items are listed in Harvard's equipment databases. For details on equipment object codes generally and fabrication object codes specifically, please refer to the RAS handout on Coding Capital and Non-Capital Equipment Properly as well as the Facilities and Equipment Policy from University Accounting Services. Contact Kara Colannino with any questions.
