Commitment of Faculty Effort on Sponsored Projects

Although the Faculty of Arts and Sciences welcomes external funding from sponsors, it pays the full academic-year salaries of faculty members to insulate their teaching and research from external constraints. Specific commitments of effort in proposals and budgets for federally funded projects constrain faculty members. Members must account in detail for their committed effort, and the Faculty must cover the associated indirect costs. When "cost-sharing" is not mandated, faculty members should describe their intended contribution to a project without making a specific commitment that must be documented. See:

Annual Salary and Effort Certification for Faculty

Annual review and certification is required for salaries paid to faculty from sponsored awards and for effort committed to sponsored projects. This process is governed by the FAS Faculty Effort Certification Policy and Procedures. Questions about this process should be addressed to Alan Long, Assistant Dean for Research Finances and Systems, aklong@fas.harvard.edu , 6-2491.

Monthly Salary Certification for (non-faculty) Staff

Monthly review and certification is required for salaries paid to staff (other than faculty) from federal sponsored awards, as documented in the Monthly Salary Certification Policies and Procedures. Questions about this process should be addressed to Nuala McGowan, Sponsored Programs Administrator, nmcgowan@fas.harvard.edu, 5-7681.
