Hydrology and the Water Cycle

Student learn about the water cycle and how it is linked to the ecosystem.  Students construct their own model scale watershed.

Lesson Plan 3:

Revisit the Lake Profile: Field Expedition #2

Students return to Echo Lake to document how the lake system has changed with the onset of winter.

Lesson Plan 5:

Revisit Pond Water Popsicles: Microbes in Winter!

With samples collected from their second field trip to Echo Lake, students will “field test” their hypotheses and conclusions from the experiments they conducted in Lesson Plan 2.

Lesson Plan 6:

Synthesis: Connecting the dots

Students draw conclusions from their cumulative dataset with “round-table” discussions on the human impact on Echo Lake and relate their new insight to global system.

Lesson Plan 7 (pdf)

Introduction to the Ecosystem: Lake profile

Students get acquainted with Echo Lake in Plymouth, Vermont. Students learn about the ecology of a freshwater aquatic system while making field observations and collecting environmental data.

Lesson Plan 1:

Pond Water Popsicles

In this lesson plan, students will discover microbial cells in nature.  They will develop hypotheses about microbial survival under freezing conditions.  In Lesson Plan 6 they will test their hypotheses in the natural environment.

Text Box: RedParka lesson plans are designed to provide middle school teachers with a fun, accessible option in ecosystem education. The RedParka Resource Unit includes 7 lesson plans designed to excite students about polar research, environmental science and microbiology by having students explore the ecosystem in which they live and comparing and contrasting their findings with the dry valleys in Antarctica.
