Saturday Night magazine: Untold Stories of Sexual Assault at Harvard

Read the 2008 edition of Saturday Night

Read the 2007 edition of Saturday Night

Tell your story.

Sexual assault impacts every university whether big or small. No community, no matter how safe or closely knit, can really claim to be free of this silent problem. Saturday Night: Untold Stories of Sexual Assault at Harvard offers an opportunity for concerned students and faculty to bring this problem out into the open. The Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, together with a group of committed students, organize this compilation of student's stories, poetry, art, photography, etc. depicting how sexual violence has impacted their lives. This project began at Duke and is now being taken up by campuses across the nation. For information on Duke's project, please visit http://www.duke.edu/web/saturdaynight/index.html.

The publication is used in a variety of settings to raise dialogue about sexual assault. Your words will reach thousands on Harvard's campus and beyond. Our hope is that through the intimate voices and viewpoints of survivors and friends, all who read the publication will be forever touched and changed. Your voice will join the collective call from other survivors and friends demanding a response and inspiring change.

We are currently accepting student submissions for the 2008 edition. The next edition will be available at a launch party during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

Please consider submitting something yourself as a survivor, as a friend of a survivor, or as anyone who feels that their life has been impacted by sexual violence. Please forward this information to friends who might be willing to submit their stories or work .

Submitting to the magazine:
2 types of submissions

1. SURVIVOR STORY
Sharing your story with the world can be a difficult but very empowering decision. Your words can inform and inspire other survivors and the Harvard community and raise awareness about sexual assault.

2. COMMENTARY
Is your friend a survivor? Your family member? Has your life been impacted by sexual violence? Saturday Night at Harvard hopes to share a variety of viewpoints about sexual assault. All opinions are welcome, and our hope is to provide a starting point for rich dialogue about this topic. No viewpoints are off limits.

All submissions are treated with absolute confidentiality. The only person who will ever know your identity is the Director of the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (OSAPR), Sarah Rankin. She will work with you through the process to ensure that you are happy with your submission and how it is used in Saturday Night . All submissions are published anonymously; however, you will be required to sign a release form to grant us use of your submission.

Submissions should tell your unique story and what it is that you wish to share with the community. No set form or content is required. All forms of expression are encouraged (narratives, poetry, artwork, etc.). We hope to publish submissions representing the diversity of Harvard: male, female, all races, and all sexual orientations. The only substantial editing we will need to do is for any incriminating statements so please avoid naming specific people, clubs, or organizations.

The Process:
1. Email your submission (Word document, jpeg, etc) to Sarah Rankin at osapr@fas.harvard.edu
2. You can also mail your handwritten submissions or art to:
OSAPR
1350 Massachusetts Ave
731 Holyoke Center
Cambridge, MA 02138

3. Sarah will review your submissions for content.
4. You will be required to sign a release form for your submission to be published (either signed in person or mailed to Sarah Rankin).
5. Everyone who submits will be invited to the magazine launch in early April. Anyone who would like to read their piece or have someone read it for them, will be welcome to do so at the launch. This is certainly optional and NOT required.

Please email osapr@fas.harvard.edu with questions. Your confidentiality is absolutely assured. Thank you for your submissions and your efforts to end sexual violence.
