Books

Rape/Sexual Assault
Bohmer, Carol and Andrea Parrot. Sexual Assault on Campus: The Problem and the Solution. New York: Lexington Books, 1993.
Why does no one seem to know what to do about the problem of sexual assault on campus? Why do so few women report their assault? Why are so many cases mishandled? What is the best was to handle sexual assault on campus? Bohmer and Parrot, both recognized experts on the problem of rape, particularly acquaintance rape, examine these and other questions in this landmark book. This book combines social science evidence, analysis of legal doctrine and cases, and interviews with victims, their parents, campus security officers, and college administrators. The authors offer important new guidance to all involved in the problem, particularly administrators, lawyers, and service providers working with students.

Burgess, Ann W., ed. Rape and Sexual Assault: A Research Handbook. New York and London: Garland Publishing, 1985.
This book highlights the first decades of serious research in the field of rape victimology. The studies have provided some initial insights to the victim, the aggressor, and the nature and extent of the crime of rape and sexual assault within a cultural context. This book describes historical background of the anti-rape movement, information on survivors' needs and information on the impact of rape. It provides an overview of studies on the incidence of violence, family violence, causal studies looking at the aggressor, the social situation in which violence occurs and the norms and values which sanction the violence. It discusses the sexual abuse of children, child pornography, handicap survivors, forced sex in marriage, and murder.

Burgess, Ann W. Rape and Sexual Assault II. New York and London: Garland Publishing, 1988.
This is the second volume of research on rape and sexual assault. It addresses a wide range of topical issues focusing on two major areas: victim populations and the social context of rape. This book provides a basis for new insights into both the effect of rape on its victims and the social constructs that support and promote rape in our culture.

Brison, Susan J. Aftermath: Violence and the Remaking of a Self. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2002.
This is a personal narrative of recovery and a philosophical exploration of trauma. This book examines the undoing and remaking of a self in the aftermath of violence. It explores, from an interdisciplinary perspective, memory and truth, identity and self, autonomy and community. It offers imaginative access to the experience of a rape survivor as well as a reflective critique of a society in which women routinely fear and suffer sexual violence.

Dinnerstein, Dorothy. The Mermaid and the Minotaur: Sexual Arrangements and Human Malaise. New York: Harper Colophon Books, 1963.
This book touches on the crisis of feminist feeling and makes significant contributions to feminist analysis. It speaks eloquently through feminism to the history of organized human life. It attempts to resolve the contradictions between the Freudian and the Gestalt vision of societal processes.

Domitrz, Michael J. May I Kiss You?: A Candid Look at Dating Communication, Respect, and Sexual Assault Awareness. Greenfield, WI: Awareness Publications, 2003.

The book provides candid advice, real-life scenarios, and interactive exercises which will revolutionize your approach to dating while adding romance, building respect, and heightening your awareness of sexual misconduct and assault.

Estrich, Susan. Real Rape: How the Legal System Victimizes Women Who Say No. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1987.
This book talks about the casual treatment of rape by the law. Susan Estrich writes about her personal experience with authorities and exposes often shocking facts and is a trenchantly written call for reform. Her book is valuable for its untangling of the various threads of illogic that have formed the centuries-old web that has prevented justice from being served-for men as well as women.

This is a US Department of Justice research report on the sexual victimization of college women. It contributes extremely important data to our understanding about the prevalence and nature of violence against women in the US.

Girshick, Lori B. Woman-to-Woman Sexual Violence: Does She Call it Rape? Boston: Northeastern University Press, 2002.
A woman raping another woman is unthinkable, our legal system is not equipped to handle woman-to-woman sexual assault, our women's services do not have the resources or even the words to reach out to its victims, and our communities face hurdles in acknowledging its existence. Lori B. Girshick exposes the shocking, hidden reality of woman-to-woman sexual violence and gives voice to the abused. It also recommends how agencies can best provide services, outreach, and treatment to survivors of woman-on-woman rape and battering, using suggestions from the survivors themselves.

Harris, Miriam K., ed. Rape, Incest, Battery: Women Waiting Out the Pain. Fort Worth, TX: TCU Press, 2000.
This book talks about rape and how some women are never able to rise above the pain, rage, and humiliation, while others seem to transcend the violence and rebuild their lives. Miriam Harris states that the ability to transcend a rape is courage, courage to face the past and to put it into words. Miriam Harris was project coordinator for the Battered Woman's Emergency Intervention Project in Dallas. Harris called out professional writers, women in shelters, and scholars in academe. After a long process of collecting, selecting and editing submissions by these women she put together this book.

Madigan, Lee and Nancy Gamble. The Second Rape: Society's Continued Betrayal of the Victim. New York: Lexington Books, 1989.
This book exposes the blind and subtle ways in which our society fosters even greater feeling of violation and trauma in women who report their rape. The second rape is an act of violation, alienation, and disparagement that a survivor receives when she turns to others for help and support. It can occur because she has been brave enough to tell someone of her assault but her therapist, police, friends, etc. call her credibility into question.

McLaren, Karla. Rebuilding the Garden: Healing the Spiritual Wounds of Childhood Sexual Assault. California: Laughing Tree Press, 1997.
At the very core of the molest trauma lies not sexual predation, but spiritual predations. Physical and psychological therapies can address many parts of the trauma, but without a spiritual understanding, healing will be incomplete. The book helps readers transform the experience of sexual assault from a baffling personal tragedy into an engagement with the deeper spiritual and cultural issues of the world.

Parrot, Andrea and Laurie Bechhofer, eds. Acquaintance Rape: The Hidden Crime. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1991.
According to recent estimates of the approximately 1 in 4 women who are rape victims by their middle twenties, over three quarters will have been sexually assaulted by someone they know. Yet, forced sex between people who know each other is still often not viewed as a crime-at least not a serious one-by our judicial system, or society at large. This book represents the first attempt to bridge that gap and provide professionals with the latest thinking in the field. Sections covers societal attitudes towards acquaintance rape, contributing factors, a typology of acquaintance rape, victim and assailant profiles, consequences, professional and societal responses and avoidance the prevention strategies and issues.

After interviewing sexual offenders-from respected community leaders and clergymen to trusted family friends and relatives-Salter argues that it is our misconceptions about predators that makes us so vulnerable to them. She argues that rape and molestation are rarely crimes of impulse. Predators act with careful premeditation and use sophisticated deception techniques to gain our trust, often playing double role sin the community. Even after they are apprehended, many offenders manage to avoid conviction. This book removes the veil of secrecy and gives us the tools we need to protect ourselves and our family.

Warshaw, Robin. I Never Called it Rape: the Ms. Report on Recognizing, Fighting, and Surviving Date and Acquaintance Rape. New York: Harper and Row, 1988.
This book combines survey result and scholarly perspective with vivid first-person accounts to explain what date rape is, how it happens, and how it has remained so hidden a crime for so long. There are stories and poems written by women of all ages and circumstances about the abuse they suffered either as young girls or as teenagers. Writing with courage and honesty, these women tell of experiences ranging from the most subtle overtures to repeated abuse. As a complement to the writings, Ellen Bass, both a well-known poet and experienced counselor, has written a moving essay that places child sexual abuse in a broad social context. It not only recounts and illuminates; it offers real hope for change-and healing.

Driscoll, Frances. The Rape Poems. Port Angeles, WA: Pleasure Boat Studio, 1997.
This book is a psychologically searing collection of poems written about rape. It is a deeply disturbing, compelling and somehow beautifully rendered sequence of poems, in which a terrible wounding has been transformed by long meditation, careful attention to detail and superb artistry.
