Kyle Haddad-Fonda's Study Abroad Experience
Kyle Haddad-Fonda, a senior concentrating in History and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Issaquah, Washington, split the summer of 2008 between Beijing, China and Cairo, Egypt conducting thesis research on Sino-Arab relations from 1955 to 1958.
"Research, I learned, is unpredictable...but ultimately there is no substitute for luck...every unconscious transition from Chinese to Arabic and back again testified to the profound integration of the twentieth century: while nuclear weapons and authoritarian governments increased the power of individual nation-states, the same specter of annihilation forced all countries’ destinies to become inextricably intertwined. This global integration on the personal and national levels, I realized, was the story I wanted to tell through my research."
