Eligibility requirements
- Applicants should be currently enrolled Harvard College students in good standing at the College at the time of application and participation.
- Applicants may not have received a David Rockefeller International Experience Grant in the past.
- Applicants must return to campus for at least one semester following their experience abroad.
- Student projects/programs must take place in the summer and must be at least eight consecutive weeks in duration and require a full-time commitment from the student to the project for the duration of the project/program.
- Students may apply for independent projects or any Harvard or Harvard-approved international programs that meet the Committee’s requirements for significant international experience. Learn more about Harvard-run international programs here.
Application Requirements
All applicants must submit the following materials:
- Application Checklist (available late fall 2009)
- Common Application for Research and Travel (CARAT), available online at https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat/
- A proposal that describes the program or project and how it relates to your personal, academic, and/or professional goals (max. 750 words). If relevant to your project, describe your foreign language proficiency level. Please note any significant international experience you have had during your time at Harvard College.
- Unofficial transcript
In addition, required supplemental materials vary slightly depending on the primary type of project or program you intend to participate in. Students may apply to participate in projects or programs in the following categories:
- Harvard Summer School
- Harvard-Run Program
- Non-Harvard Study Abroad Program
- Internship, Service, or Volunteer Project
- Independent or Thesis Research

Name of the host organization/company:
- Letter of recommendation from a Harvard faculty member, TF, proctor, or other advisor.
- Letter of acceptance from the study abroad program/site (if not available at time of application, evidence of the student’s application to the program must be submitted).

Internship/Service/Volunteer Project
- Letter of recommendation from a Harvard faculty member, TF, proctor, or other advisor.
- Letter of acceptance from the host organization/company or program (if not available at time of application, evidence of the student’s application to the program or project must be submitted).
- Resumé.

Independent or Thesis Research
- Letter of recommendation from a Harvard faculty member supporting your research project. The letter of recommendation must be directly related to this project.
- Resumé.
Please note that if you will be working with human subjects, you will need work with your faculty sponsor to be granted approval from the Institutional Review Board before you will be able to collect your grant check.
