Office of International Programs
Summer Study Abroad Grants

About the Program
Office of International Programs Summer Study Abroad Grants provide funds to support undergraduate study abroad during the summer. There are many types of programs eligible for support, from faculty-led Harvard Summer School Programs abroad, to academic programs sponsored by Harvard’s international and area centers, to non-Harvard study abroad programs pre-approved for Harvard degree credit. Students may choose programs ranging from intensive language programs and field-based research programs or archeological digs to academic programs hosted by foreign universities or US universities abroad.

These grants are made possible by the generosity of many individual alumni and friends of the College. Many Summer Study Abroad Grants fund travel to specific geographic regions, including China and Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Africa, Israel, Russia, and countries of the former Soviet Union; others fund study abroad in specific disciplines such as Jewish Studies in Eastern Europe, Armenian Studies, Life Sciences, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and Classics. All students receiving Summer Study Abroad Grants are required to submit reports on the summer program when they return to campus.

Eligibility Requirements
Undergraduates need not apply for credit for summer study abroad in order to qualify for an OIP Summer Study Abroad Grant, although many choose to do so in order to fulfill concentration, secondary field, or language citation requirements. All undergraduates except graduating seniors are eligible to apply.

Award Levels
In the Summer of 2010 over 130 applicants were funded by OIP Summer Study Abroad Grants with awards starting at $1,500 and averaging $4,000. The OIP Summer Study Abroad Grants are merit-based awards, but students with financial need receive higher awards. A student’s program budget and financial need will be taken into consideration when determining the level of the award.

How to Apply
Applying to a study abroad program
1) Observe application requirements and deadlines set by your study abroad program; 2) make sure the program is on the pre-approved program list; 3) if you seek credit for a new, non-approved program observe earlier deadlines for new program approval; and 4) apply to the program early, as you will need proof of your program application for the grant application!

Applying for Harvard degree credit for a non-Harvard program
You must apply for credit for summer study abroad for all programs except Harvard Summer School Programs. (You must apply for credit for DRCLAS SSL in Chile and SCS in Peru.)

Pre-approved study abroad programs eligible for credit are listed on the OIP website. Grant applicants who seek transfer credit for non-Harvard Summer School study abroad programs must apply online for credit by April 15th. This application for credit is non-binding, so if you are undecided about whether you want credit for your coursework abroad, APPLY FOR CREDIT.

New study abroad programs may be eligible for credit, but you must petition to have the program approved by the OIP. To request a petition for new program approval, send an email to Cathy Winnie with “request for new program approval” in the subject line. Requests will be reviewed on a rolling basis until April 1st, so apply as early as possible.

How to Apply for OIP Summer Study Abroad Grants
A complete application consists of the Common Application for Research and Travel (CARAT), available online at https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat/, as well as:

  • The Office of International Programs Summer Study Abroad Grants Cover Sheet
  • A proposal that describes the program or project (approx. 500 words)
  • An unofficial transcript
  • A letter of acceptance from the program sponsor (not required for Harvard Summer School or Harvard-affiliated study abroad programs). If such a letter is not available by the grant deadline, evidence of the student’s application to the program must be submitted
  • NOTE: If your program is not on the OIP Approved List, please include a letter of recommendation from a Harvard faculty member, TF or advisor (not required for Harvard Summer School or Harvard-sponsored study abroad programs)

Don’t forget: grant applicants who want credit for the summer study abroad experience must apply for credit online through the OIP by April 15th! (for new study abroad programs not on the OIP Approved List, by April 1st!)

Deadline and Timeline
Grant application materials should be submitted to the Office of Career Services by Friday, February 18th.

Please submit applications without envelopes or staples. Double-sided printing of applications encouraged.

Awards will be announced by the end of March.
