STUDY ABROAD FOR CONCENTRATORS IN SOCIAL STUDIES
Contact: Director of Undergraduate Studies
Dr. Anya Bernstein, abernst@fas
The Committee on Degrees in Social Studies strongly encourages study abroad for one semester, and it is
also possible to study abroad for an entire academic year. Students taking study abroad must go during their junior
year, as they cannot go during their sophomore year when they are taking Social Studies 10 or their senior year when
they are taking Social Studies 99 (the senior thesis course). Many students use a term abroad to find a thesis topic
and even to conduct preliminary research, and some students stay in the country after they have completed their studies
or return to it after a semester's hiatus in order to conduct senior thesis research.
Social Studies is extremely flexible in granting credit towards history, theory, and focus field requirements for
courses taken elsewhere, as long as they are roughly equivalent to courses offered at Harvard. Starting in 2003-04,
Social Studies will waive one junior tutorial for students who go abroad, provided that they write a research paper
of at least twenty pages in length either while they are abroad or in a non-Social Studies course at Harvard. This
paper must be approved by the Director of Studies in order to obtain junior tutorial credit.
Social Studies can give social science or history credit for study at any institution approved by the Office of
International Programs. Below please find a list of institutions where Social Studies students have done term-time
