Guidelines
Who is eligible?
Harvard undergraduates. Graduate students, faculty and staff may apply for projects whose main focus is in student artmaking.
What we ordinarily fund:
Projects that encourage undergraduate students' own original, creative work, or work
showing an original, creative approach to artistic traditions, rather
than essays or commentary about works of art created by others, that combine:
- high artistic merit
- artistic originality
- artistic experimentation
- educational benefit to undergraduates
- a "ripple" effect within the university
- involvement of and visibility to the maximum number of undergraduates
Occasionally, larger grants are given to improve artistic quality of
existing organization, based on artistic merit.
What we do not ordinarily fund:
- curricular projects, including senior theses
- fundraisers, charity benefits, or tours away from campus
- professional teachers, conductors, choreographers, technicians or
performers' fees
- presentation of performing groups from outside the University
- regular Loeb Ex shows (because they already have their own funding)
- operational support beyond start-up costs (limit, 3 years)
- projects that have minimal exposure to undergraduates
- political magazines or events that are not primarily artistic
- film projects; summer projects; ongoing classes; capital improvements
to performance spaces
- Equipment purchases
- Fees for Student Services
- Receptions
- Making of CD’s
- Lighting/Sound Operator Fees
Grant amounts:
The entire grants fund is $20,000, and grants range from $100 to $1,000.
In 2007-2008, 80 OFA grants were awarded; the average grant amount was $335.
To encourage artistic innovation, the Council may also award
a special grant of up to $1,000 for the one-time project, from the
general applicant pool that reflects the most original, creative ideas.
Collaboration among art forms is encouraged.
Method of payment:
Grants are paid primarily on a reimbursement basis but the OFA can also
pay vendors directly. Students who receive grants must submit an evaluation
of their completed project to the Office for the Arts in order to receive
their final reimbursement.
Reimbursement deadlines:
Fall 2006 Projects: Friday, February 16, 2007.
Spring 2008 & ARTS FIRST Projects: Friday, May 16, 2008.
