About the Outreach Program

Our Mission: The Outreach Program of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies serves K-12 public, private and charter schools in the greater New England area in providing resources for teaching about Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The US Department of Education funds these activities under its Title VI grant, which designates a number of universities as National Resource Centers.

The Outreach Program is staffed by Outreach Director Cris Martin and Outreach Assistant Nicole Rivett, who assist educators and students in a variety of ways. Some of the OP's most commonly utilized resources include:

The Source
The Source is a monthly email newsletter featuring Outreach Program news and resources, as well as information about Boston-area events and resources relating to Russian, Eastern European, and Central Asian language, culture, and history. Additionally, the Source contains links, essays, and aphorisms of potential interest to teachers, students and others interested in the region. To subscribe, please send an email to davisoutreach@fas.harvard.edu.

Outreach Program News
Outreach Program News is a biannual print newsletter appearing in September and January. It features news of the past semester's events and acquisitions, as well as information on upcoming events. Teacher workshops are usually announced on the front page, and registration forms are included.

Teacher Workshops
Outreach Program workshops are designed for K-12 teachers. Professional Development Points (PDP) credits may be received for workshop participation in compliance with state guidelines. For all-day workshops, a nominal fee to cover the cost of lunch may apply. Workshop topics have included:

    • Russia's Medical System
    • Afghanistan: History, Culture, and Politics
    • 1905: A Turning Point in Russian History

Classroom Visits
The Outreach Program arranges for speakers to present on many different topics at schools, conferences and other venues around Massachusetts and greater New England. Speakers may include OP staff as well as Harvard faculty and student affiliates. Some recent presentation topics have been:

    • Traveling to Russia
    • GULAG History and Legacy
    • Putin's Russia

Books
The Outreach Program lending library currently contains approximately 800 books, including childrens' illustrated storybooks, historical surveys, travel guides, and literary classics in translation. A complete list of our holdings is available upon request.

Other Lending Library Materials
The Outreach Program also maintains a collection of slides, curriculum kits, and other miscellaneous items for display. Please ask for a complete list of materials.

The following documents may be of interest for teaching and research. All items are in .pdf format and require Adobe Reader for viewing. Please check back often, as new downloads will be added.

GULAG Curriculum Unit
Pamela Kachurin, David Hosford and Thomas Lamont have written a powerful curriculum unit entitled, "GULAG: Soviet Prison Camps and Their Legacy." A .pdf version of the curriculum unit is available for download here. Print copies are also available, free of charge, upon request. Please contact us via telephone or email for more information.
