Jeffrey S. Gurock of Yeshiva University is Joseph Engel Visiting Professor of American Jewish history in the Fall, 2007 semester. He is the author or editor of thirteen books including A Modern Heretic and a Traditional Community: MoredekaiI M. Kaplan, Orthodoxy And Ameerican Judaism (Columbia U Press). In 1998, A Modern Heretic was awarded the Saul Viener book prize from the American Jewish Historical Society.He is a former chair of the Society's Academic Council and served for twenty years as Associate Editor of American Jewish History, the leading academic journal in the field. His most recent book is Judaism's Encounter with American Sports (Indiana U Press, 2005).
