To make the original Seminar possible, The North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources received major funding from the Japan Foundation, the Northeast Asia Council of the AAS, and Harvard University's Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies. The Harvard-Yenching Library joined the NCC in co-sponsoring the Seminar and assisting with on-campus logistics.

The subsequent electronic publication of the workbook was made possible by the Japan Foundation which permitted an extension of their original grant to allow for redesign and reformatting for web publication.
