Welcome to ILL/DD

The Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Committee of the NCC is responsible for promoting developments that maximize access to Japanese language research materials not available in North America while minimizing language and fiscal barriers to acquiring those materials through interlibrary loan and/or document delivery. The ILL/DD Committee is comprised of both Japanese studies librarians and interlibrary loan librarians from across the country and representing academic libraries small and large. The Japan Liaison Librarian plays an important role on the committee by serving as the liaison between the NCC ILL/DD Committee and its counterpart in Japan:Global ILL Framework (GIF) Project Team, Committee on International Scholarly Communication, Japan Association of National University Libraries (JANUL).

The basic premise of the ILL/DD Committee is that in most cases it is necessary for either the Japanese studies researcher or Japanese studies librarian to collaborate with interlibrary loan staff to verify holdings information because most ILL departments do not have anyone who is able to read Japanese. The Japanese studies librarians on the committee have created a series of user guides that provide clear and detailed instructions on how to search Japanese databases and verify holdings information. They are also available to answer questions and provide advice. The interlibrary loan librarians on the committee have created user guides that address specifics about sending and receiving requests, special notes, and information about packing and sending books to Japan.
