Report on the Regional Training Network Steering Committee
January 7, 2005
The Regional Training Network Steering Committee was formed to assist the NCC with the planning and implementation of e-resource training for end users.
Since the last NCC Meeting in August 2004 the RTN Steering Committee assisted the NCC in drafting the grant proposal currently pending with the Japan Foundation to fund an initial year of workshops. That proposal, if fully funded, would offer up to ten workshops during JF FY 2005-06 (please see the proposal statement circulated to Council Members for further details.)
The main part of the RTN's job is to locate appropriate venues for holding such training. This can include short "evangelism" sessions at for example regional AAS meetings about the extent of e-resources, and hands-on training in using such resources.
So far the committee has assisted the NCC in planning one workshop, in making initial arrangements for two more, and in arranging more generally for workshops through the regional AAS meetings. The first scheduled workshop will take place at the ASIANetwork meeting at Whittier College near LA on April 21, 2005. The program is an introductory session to be co-taught by two T-3 Workshop graduates, Hitoshi Kamada of the University of Arizona and Yunshan Ye of St. Olaf's College. Appropriate to the liberal arts faculty that comprise ASIANetwork, the session will cover Chinese-language along with Japanese-language resources.
Two additional sessions are in the planning stage. First, Harvard University's Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies has provided $5,000 to support one or more regional workshops to be held at Harvard during AY 2005-06. Second, the Society for East Asian Anthropology would like to sponsor a workshop in conjunction with their meetings in November 2005 in Washington DC. SEAA has allocated $800 in matching funds and will lend logistical support as co-sponsor.
While there are no concrete dates as of this writing, several regional AAS conferences are interested. Executive Director Victoria Bestor will attend the AAS Council on Conferences (COC) meeting during the AAS in Chicago. (Frank Chance, co-chair of RTN, assumes the chair of COC.) That meeting will be an ideal opportunity to present the NCC's regional training initiative and enlist the support of the regional and other AAS conferences.
The RTN Steering Committee: Frank Chance, University of Pennsylvania, Co-chair; Michael Smitka, Washington and Lee University, Co-chair; Robert Felsing University of Oregon, Laura Miller Loyola University of Chicago, and Brett Walker Montana State University.
