About the NCC
The NCC, founded in 1991, serves the field of Japanese Studies in North America by working closely with librarians, faculty, and students to strengthen Japanese language collections and to promote access to information in all forms and formats. The NCC collaborates closely with Japanese institutions, leading North American organizations in the library and information field, and regional groups to open access to and to provide instruction on the huge range of Japanese resources needed by the field.
Major NCC Initiatives:
- promote cooperative collection development among North American libraries;
- create more efficient and wide-ranging forms of information exchange within North America and between North American and Japanese libraries;
- improve access to library and information resources on Japan for students and faculty at both large and small institutions throughout North America;
- support reference and other services to faculty and students in smaller institutions without major Japanese language collections and without the services of a trained Japanese studies librarian;
- develop professional training and continuing education programs for Japanese Studies librarians and other librarians who serve the information needs of Japanese Studies faculty and their students;
- promote information literacy through user-training in new Japanese language electronic resources materials in North American academic institutions;
- facilitate access to electronic materials developed on Japan by sharing information and providing a forum for discussion of issues related to digital resources, and;
- the NCC is always ready to work with librarians, faculty, students, and others in the field to develop new initiatives to meet emerging needs for library and information resources to advance Japanese Studies Scholarship and to benefit understanding internationally.
