Conservation and Preservation of Materials at the National Diet Library

The principles for conservation of materials do not differ from those of other major research libraries around the world. Similar measures are taken regarding room temperature, type of paper, type of boxes used to store books, lighting, etc. Our tour of the site of the conservation department was particularly fascinating because we were able to observe the process of restoring materials made of Japanese paper (washi). We greatly enjoyed watching the meticulous handwork being done in a Japanese-style tatami room on low tables with a view of a serene garden outside the large windows.
