Where is Jazz Headed in the 21st Century? Lydon Interviews Vijay Iyer on the Future of Jazz

With the pianist Vijay Iyer as guide, newly tenured as a professor at Harvard, it tends toward the experimental, with drummers, young musicians and slam poets. If it doesn’t always swing, it’s surprising and takes you in new directions. Will jazz be forgotten or just re-shaped by new, emerging artists like Vijay Iyer?

Vijay Iyer brings you inside the head of a jazz improviser and describes the expressive give and take conversation musicians are having with each other.

Welcome!

The Harvard University Department of Music is devoted to the study and practice of music, and exists to provide a first-rate musical education that gives students advanced skills in music as well as knowledge of music history and repertory. Collaboration, creativity, scholarship and musicianship all figure prominently in the department's mission and practice. We offer both an undergraduate and a graduate program. Undergraduates receive an AB with a concentration in music, and graduate students complete a PhD program in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, or composition. There is also a small AM degree program in Performance Practice, and a dual-degree (AB/MM) program that is a collaboration with New England Conservatory. The Music Department sponsors numerous concerts, colloquia, lectures and special music events each month, which are free to students and the public. [Read MORE]
