Ethnomusicology conference features performance by Ethio-pop DEBO BAND 10.25.14

The eleven-member DEBO BAND has been tearing up stages from SXSW to the Lower East Side since 2006. This month they’ll play Sanders Theatre in a free concert as part of the Harvard Music Department conference, OUT OF BOUNDS. The conference honors Professor Kay Kaufman Shelemay, whose work as an ethnographer in Ethiopia during the overthrow of Hailie Selassie has inspired panel topics, as well as her scholarship on the importance of history in ethnomusicology, collaborative ethnography, and music and memory.

Welcome!

The Harvard University Department of Music is devoted to the study and practice of music, and exists to provide a first-rate musical education that gives students advanced skills in music as well as knowledge of music history and repertory. Collaboration, creativity, scholarship and musicianship all figure prominently in the department's mission and practice. We offer both an undergraduate and a graduate program. Undergraduates receive an AB with a concentration in music, and graduate students complete a PhD program in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, or composition. There is also a small AM degree program in Performance Practice, and a dual-degree (AB/MM) program that is a collaboration with New England Conservatory. The Music Department sponsors numerous concerts, colloquia, lectures and special music events each month, which are free to students and the public. [Read MORE]
