*Abstract*
It is a time-honored belief that infinitival complements of control
and raising verbs do not have overt subjects. This talk will survey
novel data indicating that, in contrast to English, French, German,
and Dutch, languages like Hungarian, Italian, and Russian do not
conform to the belief. A preliminary analysis of the cross-linguistic
variation will be offered. See "Hidden in plain sight" at
http://homepages.nyu.edu/~as109/papers.html, which also looks at data from a larger set of languages.
