Resources for the use of technology in life sciences education
Articles
An excerpt from How People Learn, a publication from the National Academy of Sciences, on the use of technology to support teaching.
Life Sciences Education publishes occasional articles on technology in education, including:
Approaches to Cell Biology: Developing Educational Multimedia, by Robin Heyden
Use of Animation in Teaching Cell Biology, by Bradley Stith
Molecular and Cellular Biology Animations, by Phillip McClean et al.
Each edition of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education features several articles devoted to multimedia in biology education. A subscription is needed to access articles.
Interactive Web Sites
HHMI BioInteractive is produced in conjuction with HHMI's annual Holiday lectures series on current research in biology on topics including neuroscience, sex determination, and infectious disease. Each module includes articles, a virtual lab, animations, and more.
Dolan DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor hosts a set of internet sites covering topics ranging from genetics to cancer. Each sites include a wealth of information packaged into easily digestible modules, animations, videos of interviews with scientists, and guided exercises.
Web sites include:
• DNA from the Beginning, a primer on genetics
• Inside Cancer
• DNA interactive
• And others...
irYdium Project at Carnegie Mellon University contains interactive chemistry projects, including a virtual chemistry laboratory.
Listings of multimedia resources for life sciences education
Cell and Molecular Biology Online lists a collection of web sites with animations and videos.
Educypedia hosts a list of web sites that cover a variety of science topics, including a compilation of biology animations.
Librarians' Internet Index highlights useful internet resources categorized by discipline, with a detailed description of each site.
• Listings hosted by individuals or colleges:
An extensive listing of animations and interactive tutorials in biology from North Harris College Biology Department
A listing of "Hot" Biology Web Sites of use to educators
A listing of chemistry multimedia resources on the web by Ghislain Deslongchamps at the University of New Brunswick
• Many journals feature technology resources for teaching. For example:
Cell Biology Education includes a list of animations and structures.
The Journal of Chemical Education maintains a list of peer reviewed chemistry web sites, as well as multimedia activities. Access to many of the JCE features is restricted to subscribers.
Science's STKE (Signal Transduction Knowledge Environment) contains downloadable animations, slides, and movies created for classroom use. Requires subscription for access.
Many textbooks provide on-line animations and activities, including:
• Boyer, Concepts in Biochemistry
• Lodish et al., Molecular Cell Biology
• Purves, et al., Life: The Science of Biology
• Raven et al., Biology
Images, videos, and animations
BioClips hosts a collection of video clips capturing cell biology. Many of the short videos feature the movements of living cells set to music, while other clips are cartoons or animations created for educational purposes.
Cells alive! Videos, animations, and photographs of plant and animal cells. Features live images documenting the growth of bacteria and cancer cells.
Virtual Cell provides images of a plant cell, with EM and cartoon representations of internal structures.
The MicrobeLibrary from the American Society of Microbiology, has a collection of visual images of microbes and educational animations.
The Multimedia Site in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard showcases animations and videos on techniques in molecular biology.
Colby College has a collection of organic chemistry animations.
