Scott Wiseman's Table , 2002

poplar, cherry, maple, birch, mahogany.

One winter night I noticed four wooden legs peeking out from a trash bin. Pulling them out of the bin I found an elegant side table frame, formed in beautiful Shaker style. The name of the previous owner, Scott Wiseman, who never completed the table, was penciled under the table top. The shapes and curves of the new parts are informed by classical scroll shapes, musical string instruments and elephant motifs.

I built the drawer from discarded pieces of cherry, spalted poplar (wood whose appearance has been altered by fungi) and maple wood. The carved handle was formed from Sapelli wood (“African Mahogany”) with a retractable back that fits into a dovetail groove, enabling it to be removed when the table is in transport. The tabletop was planed by hand and then fitted with breadboards and cornered by two mahogany butterfly cleats.
