Firepalce Salad Set, 2004
Maple, found brass parts (from an old fireplace tongs)
Each arm of the fireplace tong that I found, culminated into a nice 4-finger claw that used to hold firewood or coal. Upon examining them, I decided that a new role for them could be collecting vegetables in a salad bowl. After disinfection and cleaning, the claws would be naturally suited for pushing cherry tomatoes, peppers and lettuce on to a matching wooden spoon.
Therefore, the next task was to find a component in the fireplace set that can serve as a bracket to connect the wooden spoon to its future arm. Here, the tongs again marked the solution. The arms of the tong are held together by a curved spring. The small brass part that connects the arm to the spring resembles the foot of a ballet dancer standing on her or his toes. I decided that this part could connect a wooden scoop to a turned handle. I then turned a handle from curly maple wood, finished and connected the parts with brass screws.
