Block , 2005

reclaimed southern yellow pine, found wooden pulley block, walnut, found aluminum collars, cotton.

I found the empty shell of a gigantic pulley block on the street in Cambridge. The block originally encased two pulleys, which turned on a pin that penetrated the wooden shell (from top) allowing sailors to manage loads with less force. I fitted the block with drawers, using wood I salvaged from an old mill in Worcester, MA. I decided to pay homage to the block's past by turning two Yard Arm look alike drawer pulls. The pull is attached to the drawer with crimson rope that enters it through a aluminum port hole.
