SECTION SIGNUP
: Section enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis - e'mailing the course account does not get you into a section, nor does choosing one when you submit your Scratch homework. The only way to enroll in a section is to run the section program. YOU MUST be in a section to have homework graded!

To sign up for a section, you will use the FAS username and password that you created to send your initial e'mail on FAS WebMail. This time, however, you will connect to FAS using a command line, or terminal, window. On a Mac, look in the Utilities folder in Applications, and you should see a program named Terminal. On Linux, you should also find Terminal, or a similar-named command-line window.

On a PC, you can download SecureCRT from FAS IT - click the Software Downloads tab on the top menu bar. Enter your Harvard ID number and PIN when asked. You can then choose SecureCRT and download it. Harvard has a group license for all enrolled students, which will cover your use of the software. IF you are running a 64-bit operating system, there is a link there to a free program called Putty, which you will need to use instead.

Once you have one of these programs, you will connect to nice.harvard.edu - in SecureCRT, choose Open Connection, and you may find it already listed. If you type it in yourself, you should use a protocol called SSH2 for the connection to work. On a Mac or Linux, in Terminal, type the command:

  >     ssh yourusername@nice.harvard.edu

Replace "yourusername" with your own FAS account username. When asked, enter your password. After a number of messages from the system, this brings you to a command prompt, that looks similar to either "ice:~ %" or "username@ice4:~$". At this prompt, enter the command:

  >     ~libe50a/bin/section

You should now see a request to enter your name, and then a list of available sections. Choose the section you wish to join from the list, and you're done. If you sign up for one section and then want to change your mind, you can run the program again and select a different section from those available.

SCRATCH HOMEWORK SUBMISSION: AFTER you have signed up for a section, you may now submit your Scratch Homework on the Scratch page. You will be asked to authenticate with the username and password given by Dr. Leitner last night in lecture. You will also need to indicate your section choice when you do, so that each TA is able to locate the homework submissions for their students for grading.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2011
SECTION UPDATE
: We are still working out sections and have decided that, since you do not need to submit homework until Sept. 19th, we will give you more information on sections, show you how to run the section program, and show you how to submit the Scratch Homework during the lecture on Monday (9/12). Remember, you may always attend any section you wish to go to!

HOMEWORK 1 QUESTIONS: Several of you have written asking how to do the two problems with user input, for calculating the temperature and the weight. Dr. Leitner will cover these topics this coming Monday in lecture, and we will also do more with them in sections next week.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2011
VIDEOS
: The video of this evening's section is now posted and linked at right.

After enrollment closes and you have signed up for sections, the link will be moved to the Section page (currently unavailable).

: There will NOT be any section meetings this week. Next week we will have "open sections" - you may attend any time that works for you. The times for Open Sections will be posted here later this week.

Near the end of next week, we will open the Section Program so that you can sign up for sections. When that happens, information will be posted here on the website.

WEBSITE: As you are looking around the website, there may be some pages that you cannot access without a login. YOUR HUID WILL NOT work for these pages. After enrollment is completed, we will tell you how to access them - you will not need anything on them until after that time.

AUGUST 22, 2011
WELCOME to CSCI E-50a!
This course is intended for students who have no background in programming! We do expect you to be comfortable using a computer, mouse, browser, etc. Classes will begin on August 29th - we hope you'll join us!

LIVE STREAMING VIDEO OF CLASS: When our class lectures are being held, those of you who can't come to class may log in and watch the lecture "live". To make sure you are set up to do so, please see the Extension website info on Distance Education. Then use the link at right (under VIDEOS) to connect on Monday nights. Select our class from the list and click for the page. If the video has started, you will see a link called "Join", which you may click to begin the video. If class has not started yet, the page will refresh automatically until you see the Join link.

CHAT ROOM: While the lecture is streaming live, we will also have a chat room open so that you can communicate with the classroom. The chat will be monitored by Jan (usually), and the link for it is also located at right. You are welcome to type in questions or comments that will be shared as appropriate with the classroom. We suggest that you set up your login before the first lecture.

If you have questions, please feel free to send them to the CSCI E-50a Course Account at libe50a@fas.harvard.edu.
