HOMEWORK 3, PART 1 HINTS: A number of people have had questions about the
current homework. You do not need to use parameters or returns for this homework
- we will do plenty of them on the next homework. Instead, you may use class-scope
variables for data that is needed in more than one method in a program. To help
you, we are making available a page of Homework Hints,
with some helpful suggestions.

COPYING LECTURE PROGRAMS:
If you would like to copy any of the lecture examples, they are available to
you through your FAS account. Log into your account, change into the directory
where you'd like the program to be, and then type this command:
cp ~libe50a/unit2/programName.java
.
Be sure you include the period at the end, after a blank space or two - this
will copy the file and keep the same filename. You should change 'programName'
to whatever program you wish to copy. You may also get the sample programs that
Dr. Leitner writes in lecture using this command.
COLUMBUS DAY: Monday October 12th is Columbus Day - there will NOT be
a lecture on that day. However, the Monday evening section WILL meet at its usual
time and place.
MIDTERM: Our midterm exam will be held on Monday October 26th during
the first hour of class. If you are in the 6-state New England area, you
are expected to come to campus to take the exam. If you are outside this area,
you will need to schedule a proctored exam. Please see the information on the Extension
School website, and set up your proctor during the coming week.
HOMEWORK 2 CORRECTION: In Part D, the Babysitter problem states
that it is required for graduate credit students. It is one of the programs you
may choose, but is not specifically required.

SECTIONS: The section program is now posted so you may sign up for sections.
To do so, you will need to log into your FAS account, but do so by going to nice.harvard.edu in
a secure Telnet program (using ssh). On the Mac, you can use Terminal (found
in Applications / Utilities / Terminal), and the command is: ssh
username@nice.harvard.edu Enter your password when asked.
On the PC you should download Secure CRT from the FAS
Downloads page. Click Downloads in the top menu and then log in with your
HUID and PIN. Once you've installed it, you can click the button called Connect
and it will give you a list of connections - choose nice.harvard.edu, and enter
your username and password when asked.
Once in your account, at the prompt type: ~libe50a/bin/section You
will be asked to enter your name, and then given a list of available sections.
You may choose a section from the list, and you will be enrolled in that section.
If you change your mind, you may run the program again to make a change. You
will need to know your section in order to submit your Scratch homework!
HOMEWORK CORRECTION: In problem 5 of the homework, the weight for
a 6 foot man should be 190 pounds, not 191 - our apologies for the typo!!

Handouts. If you are planning to watch the lecture live
online, please download them before the start of class.
SCRATCH SECTION: There will be a special section to help
you become acquainted with Scratch, the initial programming environment
that we will be using. This will take place on Tuesday evening,
Sept. 1st, from 5:30 - approximately 7:30 PM. If you would like
to attend in person, it will be held at 1
Story St. on the 3rd floor, in Room 302. It will be streamed
live online as well as posted afterwards on our Video
page. To join the session online, use the same procedure that
you use to join the lecture (above).
SECTIONS: We will have weekly sections beginning next week.
The sections next week will be open - you may attend any section
that you wish. Near the end of next week we will post our section
program, which will allow you to sign up for a particular section. YOU
MUST BE IN A SECTION TO HAVE YOUR HOMEWORK GRADED! However,
you may continue to attend any (or as many) sections each week as
you wish. When the program becomes available, information will be
posted here on the website telling you how to sign up for a section.
Sections are on a first-come, first- serve basis. We will continue
to have a live-streamed section on Tuesdays, as well as other online
options.
WELCOME! We hope you'll join us for the Fall semester of
CSCI E-50a! We assume that you have no prior programming experience,
but that you are comfortable doing basic things on a computer
(e-mail, web surfing, writing a letter, etc.). Come explore a
new world with us!
LECTURES: Lectures will begin on Monday, August 31st!! We
will be meeting this year in Maxwell
Dworkin, in Room G-115.
This year our lectures will be "live-streamed" - this means
that you can log on from home and watch them live as they are being
given. To do this, at class time, open your browser window and
go to: http://classroom.dce.harvard.edu.
You will see a list of classes being given with live-streaming,
and ours is third on the list. Click the class name, and it will
take you to a page where you can join the session. If it displays
a message that no videos are available, the page should automatically
refresh so that when we begin, you will see a button there labeled "Join".
Click that button to watch live. |
